Sam Byram at right back
C&H
Sam Byram will be making a major pitch to clinch the right back position for himself this season with the backroom staff seeing him as the real deal.

Many are anxious that with Sofiane Fegouhli having arrived and Gokhan Tore on his way to the Hammers, Michail Antonio will be continuing at right back this term.

But Julian Dicks and the coaching staff are confident that young Byram will be making his presence felt big time.

Byram may face the same sort of wait as was experienced by Antonio last term but this is the season Slaven Bilic sees as his breakthrough campaign.

We were told by Tony Gale, a pal of Julian Dicks, that ‘The Terminator’, Slav and the back rooom staff rate the youngster very highly.

Galey said: “I was speaking with Julian last season and he told me that the lad is rated very highly by everybody so expect him to be breaking through.”

Re: Sam Byram at right back
It would be great to see Byram given first chance to win and keep the RB spot, given it's his actual position.

Handy to know that Antonio can also play there, if required, but I wouldn't really like to imagine us going into the season with him as our first choice.

We might have a bit of a logjam at right wing/right mid, but competition for spots is something which can only been seen as good.

Re: Sam Byram at right back
Well that’s why we brought him, and in fact rated him so highly, didn’t we have to go in early rather than wait until the end of the season as Everton started sniffing around?

Never a sure thing a highly rated player from the lower leagues will step up but all the signs look good for Byram.

Hope he makes the same impression as that other full back we got from the lower leagues and should have gone to Euro 2016!

We will be missing Lanzini and I'd be very surprised if Payet starts at Chelsea so the others will get chances especially with the Europa league assumig we get there

yeah looking forward to seeing this lad, funny start for him with being cup tied, injured and suspended

Re: Sam Byram at right back
Byram will hopefully be first choice RB. If we get Hutchison then he and Antonio are also cover for that spot in a pinch and we don't need to buy another fullback. I'd see Antonio starting occasionally, especially at home, or in Europe against poorer opposition. But it's Byram's to take just as Cresswell has at LB.

Juggling the wingers is going to be a tricky one for Slav though.

Nortveit can play there also fivetide (left back too according to slav)

Re: Sam Byram at right back
From what Gold said on the official site about Antonio yesterday you would assume that he is going to be first choice right back:

"Slaven has said to me that he is one of the best right backs in the country as he gives you that extra scoring option.

There are not many full-backs in the Premier League who can score the goals that Michail is capable of and that makes him an exceptional player.

I am sure a lot of clubs would love to have that option of seeing a full-back score the goals that Michail produced last season and it adds a new dimension to any team."

Re: Sam Byram at right back
Gotta love Slav's attitude, if a bit gung ho!

Seems having bodies when defending is more important to him than specifically defensive minded players outside of the centre backs.

Antonio probably does carry the biggest goal threat of any fullback in the league. How we deal with him being up the field during transition is key though.

But in this age where tackling is pretty much a dying art, who's to say this isn't the way to go. Antonio definitely needs to work on his positioning, and stopping the crosses coming in though.

Last season we missed him at right wing with Moses shit, Sakho not really a winger, and Valencia and Emineke not really up to task.

Maybe with the addition of Feghouli and Tore, Michail won't be so missed from the right wing, and we can appreciate more his threat from right back?

Re: Sam Byram at right back
Yeah, as much as I thought Antonio was a potential liability at right back, what really annoyed me was having his place further forward being taken by much worse players. That shouldn't be a problem now.

If Slav really wants him at right back I just hope that during pre-season he can drill into him what he needs to do defensively.

Re: Sam Byram at right back
Gold is talking shit
Antonio scored goals playing forward and not at right back.
In a few games Bilic switched Antonio into his proper position and someone like Kouyate dropped back and he contributed going forward ... for example v Watford when he got in the box and won a pen

Re: Sam Byram at right back
I will wait to say anything more about Antonio at right back until he has had a preseason to train there and we see how the player ahead of him settle.

Byram will get his chance even if he is now the second choice right back. We have a lot of games to play hopefully.

That all said, we have some decent depth at the position now.

Re: Sam Byram at right back
Does the signing of Tore and Fegouhli really mean Antonio at right back?

Tore replaces Enner (who we always played wide rather than up top?

Fegouhli replaces Moses?

I hope and also dont think that Bilic sees Antonio as a RB this season.

Byram picks up a lot of bookings so handy that MA can fill in.

Don't forget we played Emenike and Sakho on the wing at times last season.

Payet
Antonio
Feghouli
Tore
can all fight it out to play on the wing, with Samuelsen and Quina pushing from the yoofs.

People in the club have said as much,

And remember, Moses and Valencia really only played there before Antonio was being used or when the latter was at right back.

So if we are buying them to play, Antonio needs to be somewhere else.

I did not like him there last season (too many late points lost even if that meant score draws) but I am willing to see what can be done with new players and a preseason.

Re: Sam Byram at right back
Somehow this forum has rewritten every football match last season to claim that Antonio is at fault for every goal when he played right back. Mental.

If we dont qualify for Europa then Bilic will have a job on his hands keeping all the players happy. I think we still need a wing back that could cover both wings would be ideal. But how many of them are around?

I will be disappointed if we see Antonio at right back considering his potential going forward. I dont think he will be too happy either. If he continues his form he will be pushing for an England call up but at right back he wont. Bilic has to be careful.

Re: Sam Byram at right back
Byram played most of his last couple of seasons at Leeds in the right midfield position. We could see Antonio and Byram interchanging depending on the opposition.
In the few occasions Byram has played for us, he has looked more than capable.

Re: Sam Byram at right back
I read the other day some bloke saying the best signing so far this summer is Feghouli to West Ham on a free.

On here though, nobody is rating him. People almost seem pissed off we got him.

Throw Byram in there too. I reckon we'd have been delighted siigning him this week rather than in January.
